If you are looking to expand the living space of your home or hoping to create an exterior focal point of activity, I can think of no better place to start than with a backyard fireplace. As home improvement becomes more and more accessible, there are plenty of outdoor fireplace designs available. You can decide on your own design, if so inclined, or have a contractor design one for you. Furthermore, with the availability of fireplace inserts (both electric and gas), easy to use pre-cut stone, and numerous accessories, the possibilities are nearly endless.
A key to deciding on which design suits your taste is to make the process of research and investigation an enjoyable one. Try not to rush into any decision. Map out the process before hand. Keep in mind that you are set to create an additional living space, albeit outdoors.
You might start by mentally sectioning off the area that you want to devote to your fireplace and any other accompanying accessories such as dedicated patio, table and chairs, etc. Before you get too far into the specifics of outdoor fireplace designs, remember that the end result will not only be a center of entertainment, but also a beautifying feature that accentuates your home. So you would be wise to consider sight lines from within your house before you decide on a specific location.
Other things to keep in mind as you embark on the design process are the architecture of your home and any unique existing landscaping features. These things are especially important if you are going to take on the project yourself. Remember that the vast array of materials available to you can really help you achieve the desired look. Simple elegance is a key when planning a do-it-yourself project. There are quite a range of stone colors, for example, to be able to mesh with just about any existing architectural theme.
You might decide on a cement construction and then use faux stone or faux brick siding panels to give you an authentic look without incurring the expense of actual stone. The Riviera stacked stone panel, for example, can provide you with an incredibly custom look. Or perhaps the Tudor rock face panel might combine more appropriately with the existing architecture of your home.
Finally, consider various outdoor fireplace designs and then gradually eliminate designs based on the above criteria or some of your own. What you come up with should be what is within your building capabilities, within your means, but most importantly, visually pleasing to you. Years of outdoor enjoyment are around the corner!
